Characters are groupings of playable heroes. Different versions of heroes from a single character are called variants and often share some similarities, and usually the same Supermove.
There are 38 total characters in the console game, and as of 24 April 2019, there are 34 characters and 88 heroes in the mobile game, which includes at least one variant for every console character, with the exceptions of The Atom, Enchantress, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles; Brainiac also cannot be played and is instead fought as Boss Brainiac.
Two of the playable heroes in the mobile game are not directly based on characters in the console game:
- Multiverse Batwoman is unique and has Batgirl's supermove from the first Injustice game.
- Nightwing has his supermove from the first Injustice game as well, even though his appearance can be mimicked by Robin in the console game through its gear system.
